I know some people out there are feeling down about the whole GamerGate thing, especially with the media blitz the professional victims have made this week. I’ll admit I felt it too for a while, a couple weeks ago.
But you know what I realized, gamer friends? They already lost. We already won.
When you step away from the hero worship, Gandhi did and said some stupid shit in his life. But one thing he got absolutely right is the four stages of dealing with oppressors: First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.
First They Ignore You - The media blackout and blanket censorship in the immediate aftermath of Five Guys. “N-no guys, really, they’ll go away if we just stick our heads in the sand. D-don’t talk about our unethical behavior, i-it’ll all go away!”
Then They Laugh At You - The media attacks on gamers and insults towards gamers who like particular games. Calling gamers nothing but horny teenage boys is older than Laura Croft, but the shit ramped up after the games journalists realized they had a problem. “Gamers r ded lol” “Gamers r misogynerds lol” “lol I wouldn’t fuck any of those nerds” “Black gamers are just house niggers lol”
Then They Fight You - This is where we are right now. The false flags have been flying since around the point where Phil Fish “hacked” his own website, but in the past week and for the next couple months this shit is going to be NON STOP. Indonesian spam-bots are being taxed to the breaking point. Every woman with a twitter account is pretending she’s had to flee for her life from mean people on the internet. People who have done NOTHING and said NOTHING of import in their lives are running to big daddy mainstream media to have smear pieces pumped out to try and de-legitimize a consumer base that, when you get right down to it, is mostly just asking that people stop yelling at them for not wanting to take it up the ass anymore.
Then You Win- But you want to know the great thing? It don’t matter. Don’t none of this matter. It doesn’t matter what any of them say or what any of them do, and do you want to know why?
The games journalists and SJWs have done nothing to change gaming. Not one of them has accomplished a single thing that has actually affected videogames or the group of people who enjoy videogames in any significant way. And they will continue to do nothing. Because they lost this fight the instant it started.
Oh, sure, a couple devs have had to issue meaningless apologies for stupid shit like having attractive women in games. Art interns had to take an extra afternoon to remove some cleavage from a character model. A couple teenagers, two or three indie devs, some racial minorities and women, and at least one trans person have had their lives temporarily inconvenienced because of harassment and doxxing. That all sucks and those people have my sympathy, but in the grand scheme of things three years of non-stop ultraliberal dogma being plastered all over videogame journalism has had about as much REAL impact on gaming as Conservatives had on D&D in the 80s. Demons are now Baatezu, Devils are now Tanar’ri, and we just kept on smiting and cleaving those baby-eating fuckers while hanging out with friends and enjoying our hobby.
Depression Quest didn’t do anything to change gaming. I’ve been playing horrible text adventure games since the Apple II was exciting new technology. Japan has an entire industry churning out the things. Whether the purpose of the game is to show you the HORRIBLE SUFFERING of an upper-middle-class American girl or to make you lust after your onii-san’s glistening pecker niche games will always crop up for niche markets. The only reason anyone even heard about Gone Home is because some unethical journalists wanted to push an agenda that - outside of a few nerds on the internet who actually keep up with gaming press - fucking nobody heard or cared about. The combined monetary gain of every SJW dev in the past five years isn’t a drop in the bucket of what the yearly Call of Duty or Madden game makes. A few shitty devs can’t ruin a hobby.
And while we’re at it, Angry Birds and Farmville didn’t do anything to change gaming either. Babby’s First Vidya has been and will always be around, and pay-to-speed-up-this-dull-fucking-experience browser games are at least as old as The War on Terror. Oh, a few more girls openly admit to playing videogames since Angry Birds? Pass out the fucking cookies, by that logic five-year-olds are now the most important videogame demographic.
And CERTAINLY corrupt journalists haven’t done anything to change gaming. As they’re so gleeful to point out, biased reporting has been the norm since Nintendo Power so apart from annoying the fuck out of players and developers in real-time through the power of the internet these fucks really haven’t added anything new to the table. The message has changed from “Nintendo is great!” to “Nintendo raped my feelings,” but the great news is it doesn’t matter because no one needs to go to the gaming press to learn about a game anymore.
And that’s why point 4 is struck out up there. This is not a situation of “And THEN You Win,” because the moment gamers said “fuck these guys” the fight was already over. SJWs and journalists don’t drive the game industry, as much as they’d like to pretend they do. People who enjoy videogames drive the industry.
There will be no “death of the gamer.” We’re not going to see any rainbow-haired drama-llamas “tear down the meritocracy.” And, most importantly of all, gaming will never be turned into the exclusionary hand-holding zone the morons on the anti-GG side dream of.
Videogame players hold all the cards. Our pockets drive the industry, and more than enough evidence has cropped up in the past two months to show that developers would rather cater to the people who buy and play their games than a bunch of man-children and divas who have completely outlived their purpose.
My local minister couldn’t convince me I was evil for playing Magic: the Gathering in the 90s, Jack Thompson couldn’t convince me I was evil for playing GTA3 in the 00s, and some pencil-lipped communications major who never played a videogame in her life until she realized she could exploit teenagers doing so isn’t going to convince me I’m evil for playing Bayonetta now. And we all know she’ll never convince anyone who actually plays videogames, either, because she and everyone who supports her is a liar. Thirty seconds of investigation into anything said by any anti-GGer proves them irrefutably, objectively wrong.
NOTHING any SJW says or does can change reality. They have no talent. They have no dedication. They have no drive. They can’t create anything, and they have no power to destroy. Every word that comes out of their mouths only makes them look more foolish in the eyes of gamers.
Corrupt journalists cannot win because their goal is to cut the rope that’s keeping them from drifting away into irrelevancy. Gamers gaveth, and they’ve decided to throweth away. This isn’t a battle. It’s a suicide. The corpse of their outmoded existence just hasn’t quite stopped twitching yet.
We’re rubber, they’re glue. We’re hot shit in a champagne glass, they’re cold diarrhea in a Dixie cup. We’re Kenshiro, they’re a bunch of self-righteous thugs with stupid haircuts.
